Jillian Michaels: “Mazimize Your Life” Tour

Jillian Michaels is super cool.

Going to see her live made me realize how awkward and naïve I am and how I really need to start standing up for myself and being honest with myself. Maybe it was all the wine I drank during the show, but I swear that she totally inspired me to follow my heart and do what makes me happy and what is best for me, rather than just going through the motions of my life and taking each day as it is: the same.

I went to the show with one of my best friends, Erica, and her mom. We had an absolute blast. We went to a super cute little Italian restaurant first where we got some red wine, Caesar salads, and margherita pizza. Obviously started the night off on a healthy foot (just kidding). But hey, that’s fine. We’re all in good shape and into health and fitness, so it worked Smile with tongue out

Then we ended up getting super lucky and getting our seats upgraded from the 40ish row to the 3rd row. SCORE. Still not sure why, but I’m sure not mad about it at all. I will tell you that I was surprised at the crowd of people that was there. I had this notion in my mind that it was going to be all health and fitness professionals or all obese people, but it was seriously a mixture of every person and gender you could get. I thought that was fantastic, because it really made me realize that a lot of people want to be informed about their own health and success in life and are taking steps to get there.

I didn’t take any notes during the show, since it was really dark and I would have rather held my glass of wine than a pen, but here are the main things that I took out of the night:

  • If you want something, do it now. Right now. Don’t wait any longer.
  • You can do absolutely anything you want in the whole world, and the only thing stopping you is whether you will do it or not.
  • As long as you’re not an ass, you’re doing something right in life.
  • People need other people to thrive, and you need others that lift you up in order to succeed and be happy in life.
  • You are completely, 100% responsible for where you are at in your life right now.
  • If you are a cynical person, you are setting yourself up for failure. You are going into a situation with a negative attitude and have a much lower chance at coming out on top and/or successful.
  • It is totally okay to fail in things in life, and in fact, it is a good thing. That means that you are doing something right by taking chances and risks and trying different things.
  • Find the source of the problem rather than trying to cover it up or make excuses for yourself or someone else.

I am surprised at how long I could go on with this! I am also quite surprised at how I was able to pull all this out of my head at 11:40 p.m. at night when I am exhausted. Jillian just inspires me like that apparently. Bottom line is that she is adorable and brilliant. She tells you stuff that you already know, but preaches it in such a way that makes you want to go after all your dreams and be happy and run around in the flowers forever.

I am determined to get up with a positive attitude, put myself out there, and take steps towards leading a happy, productive life that I am proud of. I work all day nannying my girls and then am going to a Tigers baseball game; yay! Hope you all enjoy this last day before the wonderful weekend <3

Okay, seriously, I want to know what you’re doing right now as you read this?! As I write this on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m., I am drinking a beer, eating fruit snacks, and watching a documentary on Miley Cyrus. Don’t I lead an awesome life?! *note the sarcasm* And want to know my wild plans for the rest of the evening? I actually have to do something productive and pick up my prescription from the pharmacy, but after that Luke and I are getting Bagger Dave’s for dinner (hello sweet potato chips) and attempting to have a picnic outside, followed up by the new episodes of The Middle and Modern Family (FINALLY!). And then in the morning I leave to go up north with my friend Audrey for a week. SCORE. I like having a little bit of time off.

Speaking of time off, after I get back from my little trip, my nannying schedule will be dropping down to 2 days a week, and then probably just 1 shortly after that. This will leave me with much more free time to work on my own business and building up my personal training clients. This is great, because that’s really what I want to focus on right now, but I know that I am going to feel guilty. You can bet that I am going to bust my butt on my fitness work, but it is going to seem like I am doing nothing, because I’m trying to start an online business! My main concern is that I still live with my parents, and I don’t want them to think I’m being lazy. I have learned that my business is not going to happen unless I have time to dedicate to it, which I haven’t in the recent months. I will now, but I need some advice on how to accept that! I heard a quote the other day (I think it was from Jillian Michaels) that if you are able to have some free time, take it with no doubt in your mind. Focus on what is important to you and use that time to shape the way the rest of your life is going to go. I agree. So if Ellen were to call me sometime in the next week and offer me a job, I wouldn’t be mad at all.

Since I have had the past few days off, I have had a ton of time to play catch-up with emails, blog stuff, beach body stuff, training stuff, workout stuff, cleaning stuff, and just everything else. It has made me feel prepared to take a vacation for the first time in, ever. I did some packing yesterday. Don’t judge me that it looks like I’m leaving for a month….I swear it’s only 5 days.

I got a great workout in:

  • TIU random toning videos (15 minutes)
  • Tara Stiles yoga (20 minutes)

I also had a super yummy breakfast of yogurt, banana, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and the best granola in the world from Costco of course. I had some green tea and my cat on the side.

And just for your pure enjoyment, can we just appreciate how freaking cute/beautiful my cat is? My sister actually found her in the driveway a year ago, and we kept her. And yes, her name is whitecat. No capitals. No spaces. Just whitecat.

Then I went to the lady’s house I nanny for with my friend Nikki (and their other nanny!) to clean out the playroom. Seriously, tell me what a damn good job we did. We were proud.

365 Happiness Challenge

Oh hey friends! It feels like I haven’t written a normal post in just about forever, so I’m excited to get back to you all Smile I suppose I have quite a bit to catch you up on!

I spent this weekend playing catch-up. I spent some much needed time with Luke and some of my friends/family that I haven’t seen in a while. I did some awesomely intense workouts, including two 5-mile runs. I worked on my personal training business, contacting new clients and working on plans for my old ones. I developed some new ideas for ways to work for Ellen and make the world a happier place in the process. I made some new to-do lists and crossed off items on my old ones. I cleaned. I did laundry. And I feel so great today for getting all that done before I leave for my trip on Thursday!

Now lets talk about what I will most likely be talking about quite a bit for the next year. I decided to start something called the “365 Happiness Challenge.” This video describes what it is and why I decided to do it:

Long story short, something cool happened the other day and I decided that I want to focus on those little things from now on to not only bring happiness to my life, but to the lives of many others. This cool shirt also happened from my friend Tara.

Instead of having a pity party for myself that I’m not exactly where I would like to be in my life, why not make the best of it? I heard the other day that things fall into place when you are happy with yourself and not expecting it. It’s like the expression, “A watched phone never rings.” Truth! If I am waiting around for a phone call from Ellen or for Jeannie to knock on my door, it will not happen. I need to work on bettering my own life and striving to be the best version of myself I can be. I need to help others and be kind. I need to work hard, yet have fun. And then when things are going good, even greater things can happen!

“You’ve got to do what you love.”

You know what I love? Being happy. Watching Ellen. Drinking coffee. Running outside. Listening to stories from old people. Traveling. Learning a fun new fact. Seeing a good friend. No traffic. Babies. Good wine. Making someone smile. Making someone laugh. A clean house. These are all tiny, tiny things! I am not hard to please. I need to remember to appreciate the small things and take life one step at a time, and everything else will fall into place.

Sure, I have some big goals for my life, but why not appreciate the small stuff along the way? Jillian Michaels says to not live the “monkey-bar style” of life. Don’t necessarily jump from one thing to the next, simply because it is there. It is okay to take some time off from your job because you are not happy with it and want to focus on finding what you love. It is okay to take a mini-vacation on your own to relieve some stress. It is okay to go away from the norm, simply because you want to! It is okay to work your ass off for a goal (*cough* working for Ellen *cough*) that no one else supports. It is okay to do what makes you happy even though it isn’t “normal.” Just be nice and the rest will happen naturally.

Do any of you have a bucket list? I have never made one of my own (Luke and I have made one together), and I figure it’s about time! I’m sure I will add a bunch to it over time, but here’s what I’ve got so far!

  1. Move out of Michigan for at least a year.
  2. Travel around Italy.
  3. Start my own health and fitness business.
  4. Learn how to speak another language.
  5. Work for Ellen.
  6. Go to all 50 states.
  7. Learn how to surf.
  8. Go to a country music awards show.
  9. Buy my own cat.

I’ve kinda fallen out of the exercise thing. Ever since I was told to take a break, I just decided to take a really long break. That’s okay. After I get back from LA, I will be back at it at 5:30 every morning. Maybe. Don’t take that too seriously.

Yesterday was a good time. I had maple pecan oatmeal with a diced apple and cinnamon. I did not take a picture, because I was running late. Surprise surprise. My 2 year-old lined up our shoes like this and it almost made me cry because it was so cute.

Then we had a delicious lunch for those with very mature taste buds of green beans, apple slices, and a grilled cheese, dipped in ketchup of course.

After that we played inside and watched lots of Backyardigans because it was raining and who likes rain if you have to be outside in it? Not me. Rain to me means stay inside, read a book, and drink some tea. Or if you’re with kids, watch Nick Jr, have some fruit snacks, and twirl around in circles. Speaking of snacks, I had a lot yesterday. Like, a lot. I could not stop eating. It was all that petting the cat that worked up my appetite.

After nannying I went to the gym to train one of my clients that I absolutely adore. She is cute as a button and becoming strong as a fox. I feel like that’s not the right animal for that saying. Correct me if I’m wrong. I was starving when I got home, so I shoveled in my mouth the first thing I could grab. That was a Chobani bite, using a banana as a spoon, and a ridiculous amount of barbeque pop chips. Gosh, I eat like a child. I do not think that will ever change.

My stomach has been hurting me the last few nights, so I decided to stop it before it starts and have some of my all time favorite saltine crackers. And no, I am not kidding. These are the bomb.

Now for the really important part of this post. I bet you all want to know what my goals for my LA trip are. Settle in.

  1. Meet Ellen DeGeneres and give her the biggest hug in the whole wide world and try not to get tears on her shirt.
  2. Not sing “I hopped off the plane at LAX…” when I hop off the plane at LAX. And yes, I will hop. Ask Luke. He will be able to support that statement.
  3. Drink at least 4 glasses of wine every day.
  4. Take a picture in front of the Hollywood sign.
  5. Kiss Ellen’s star on the walk of fame. Who are other cool celebrities who’s stars I should kiss? Or maybe just see. I’m not hip enough to know most of those people, so help a sister out.
  6. Eat a really good meal every night. And go to brunch at least once. We love brunch and mimosas.
  7. Play a game in the airport during our 4 hour layover on the way home. Scavenger hunt maybe?
  8. Go to Disneyland.
  9. Learn to surf.
  10. Take a Pilates class with Miley Cyrus.
  11. Workout with Jillian Michaels.
  12. Run into Chelsea Handler at a bar and play pranks with her all night.
  13. Meet Justin Bieber so I can take him home to marry my sister.
  14. Meet Karena and Katrina from Tone It Up and be jealous of their awesome hair and bodies.
  15. People watch. A lot.
  16. Go to Café Gratitude, Pressed Juicery, Urth Café, The Ivy, Sprinkles, and Cheesecake Factory. I know, I know. I am SO original and not touristy at all. I think all we’re going to be doing this trip is eating.
  17. Have Ellen love me so much in her audience on Wednesday that she invites us back Thursday and Friday, too.
  18. Have Ellen ask me to work for her so I never have to come home.
  19. Win the lottery while I’m there.
  20. Do what Luke wants to do, too! We’ll fit in in somehow. I have faith. No sleep and lots of sugar is the secret. We have a large stash of gummy bears to pop as soon as we start to feel tired. No rest allowed.

You think I can do it?? Babe, we have a lot to pack into 3 days. Get ready. Carb-load now so you’re prepared. I am already planning on drinking more coffee than I ever have in my life on Wednesday morning and only stopped to switch it with wine until we come home on Saturday. Maybe if I send Ellen my list she can help me. I think I will.

  1. Peanut butter or chocolate? Oh this is so hard! Why do I have to pick just one?! I guess if I can’t put them together, I would have to go with chocolate. I’m not a fan of any sort of nut butter on its’ own.
  2. Where did you get your blog title? I honestly came up with it, because I was sick of living a lie and pretending about this. I wanted to be truthful, relatable, and realistic.
  3. Have any nick-names? Lots of people call me Allie, some family members call me Al, and my dad likes to call me Big Al once in a while. Cool.
  4. Who is your blog idol? I gotta say Courtney over at Sweet Tooth Sweet Life. Hers was the first blog I have ever read and I look up to her big time.
  5. Are you a jewelry person? If so, do you have a special piece that you wear every day/a lot? Yes, I am a big person. Every day I wear 3 earrings in each ear, a necklace holding a heart Luke bought me years ago and a locket my great-grandma gave me before she passed away, my “friendship” bracelet I share with Luke, my class ring, and my grandma’s old wedding ring.
  6. Describe your perfect candle scent. Spiced cider from Bath & Body Works.
  7. What was your favorite childhood birthday present? That would probably have to be the ring my mom gave me on my 13th birthday. It’s silver with an opal stone in the center and all these pretty designs. It meant so much to me at such a young age and still does.
  8. Would you rather be stuck in freezing cold or extreme heat forever? Extreme heat, all the way. I can’t stand the cold.

Now onto a new workout. So I’ve been training Luke over the last couple of months to help him gain some muscle. He has gained like 18 pounds, mostly of muscle. He’s been working his a$$ off! So congrats babe Smile Here’s a sample of a chest/back workout we do. This is certainly something you can do, but also something you could share with your man to whip him into shape Smile with tongue out

Chest and Back Workout!
Elliptical warm-up (5 minutes):
8.0 resistance, 2.5 minutes forward, 2.5 minutes backward

Circuit 1 (15 minutes):
Ball dumbbell chest press (15 reps, 15 weights)
Seated stability ball military press (15 reps, 20 weights)
Dead lift (20 reps, 15 weights)
Standing barbell curl (15 reps)
Repeat 3x

Circuit 2 (15 minutes):
Side plank lowers (20 each side)
Straight arm raises (15 reps, 15 weights)
W-squat raise (15 reps, 15 weights)
Side lunge and overhead raise (10 reps, 20 weights)

Treadmill cool-down (5 minutes):
4.0 speed, 6.0 incline

If you bust your butt, it will take 40 minutes. It takes Luke much longer, because he gets easily distracted. Usually by me. Oops!

Cutting Back

As you guys know, over the last couple of weeks I’ve struggled with a lot. I’m just not exactly where I want to be in my life, and it’s getting super frustrating. I’m determined to turn it around though! Here’s what I’m trying out this week to get myself content again: I am going to be cutting back big time on workouts. I have been so busy lately and exercise is just starting to feel like a chore. I know I’m already physically fit, so a little bit of time off isn’t going to kill me.

The Dude - Deal With It

I also think I’m pushing myself too hard, saying I have to go to the gym for an hour every morning or I have to run 2 miles every single day, no matter what. I don’t. That’s not true. I can easily do a kick-ass Jillian Michaels DVD in my bedroom in the morning for 30 minutes, stretch for 10 minutes, and be done for the day. Boom. Just like that! Yesterday I nixed my run and did some serious yoga/stretching instead, which made me feel fabulous. I also got my blood drawn last Thursday and I think something went wrong, since my right upper arm and shoulder are killing me. It’s quite difficult to do any sort of strength training when you can’t lift your arm. So my goal for the week is to focus on more yoga.

I also signed up for Deepak Chopra’s Meditation Challenge with Oprah that starts tomorrow, so I will be trying to incorporate my meditations and yoga into some relaxing starts to the days this week. I did the challenge before and was never able to take it seriously. Determined to make it work this time! After that ridiculously long introduction, here’s my plan of workouts for the week:

  • Monday: Tara Stiles morning yoga routine + Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown, level 1
  • Tuesday: Tara Stiles spring yoga routine + jazzercise
  • Wednesday: Tara Stiles morning yoga routine + Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown, level 2
  • Thursday: Tara Stiles spring yoga routine + jazzercise
  • Friday: Tara Stiles morning yoga routine + jazzercise
  • Saturday: vinyasa class at my actual yoga studio that I haven’t made it to in about a month :/

Super chill, yet should still allow me to break a sweat every day. For those of you that don’t know, I am a “class manager” for jazzercise, so I am required to go to 3 classes a week to check people in and help out new class members. That’s why I talk about it so much. Smile Also, if you have never checked out Tara Stiles, please go to her website immediately. I’m warning you, if you watch one of her videos, you will watch them all. So make sure you have time. She is so darn cool.

I have been steadily exercising for as long as I can remember. I grew up a dancer, so I never even had to worry about exercising until my senior year of high school (which was only 4 years ago!). When I got to college I got myself on a regular workout schedule and have pretty much stuck with it ever since. I really want to try to take a full week off and see what happens. See how my energy and hunger levels are. Thoughts? Suggestions?

On a completely different note, Jenny from PBJ Designs is re-vamping my blog for me! It will most likely be down from this afternoon until a day or two later. I’m not gone; I didn’t quit blogging! I will be back, looking better than ever (not me, the blog Smile with tongue out) and ready with some new post ideas and a new direction for the blog. So yay! I’m so excited!

Weekend Recap + A Realization

Even though I’ve had a super hectic week/weekend, I’ve managed to do some legitimately fun things that I haven’t done in a while. Here’s what my weekend consisted of:

Friday

  • workout (2.5 mile run + 1 hour jazzercise class)
  • Whole Foods meet-up with a representative from a local magazine (and my mom’s old friend from high school!) that I’m going to be working with, followed up by some grocery shopping
  • date night with Luke, including Mongolian BBQ (with a coupon, oh yeah) and some Harry Potter puzzle time; We. Are. WILD.

Saturday

  • sleeping in a bit!
  • no workout, but tons of stretching and foam rolling while listening to my Jillian Michaels podcast of course
  • cleaning, blog work, and some prep for the upcoming week
  • lunch date with Caterina, a local health & fitness friend!
  • PT at the gym
  • coffee date with an old friend
  • taking the girls I babysit out to CPK for dinner and to see Oz

Okay, I have also come to a very important conclusion over the past couple of days: I enjoy my life so much more when I have people involved in it. Over the past few years I have developed this horrid habit of isolation. I tend to use any free moment I have for myself. Yes, this gives me peace and allows me to play catch-up on my life, but am I really happy and fulfilled by that? No; not at all. Seeing old friends and meeting new ones this weekend has totally confirmed how much I miss being a social person. Struggles with body issues, stress about huge changes in my life, many different jobs, and graduating college caused me to lose touch with a lot of people and just not have a ton of motivation to meet new ones. I need to bottle up this feeling and remember it for the next time I want to just lock myself in my room with some wine and reality TV (although that is exactly what I will be doing Monday night for the 3-hour Bachelor season finale).

Another thing I have realized: I suck at making commitments. Giving up junk food for Lent? Oops. Training hardcore and eating clean for a bikini competition in June? Whoops. Saying no to people? My bad. I always tend to fail when I make a goal for myself like that. Want to know when I succeed? When I just let things happen and play out as they should. Why am I trying so hard to set out for a path for my life, when the universe almost always tends to want to take me in a different direction? I need to learn to let it go and let things happen as they should. Am I still trying to limit the crap I eat during Lent to practice deprivation? Yes I sure am. Am I still planning on competing in some sort of fitness competition this summer? Yes I am, just on a smaller, local scale. Am I saying no to people? No; still working on that one. My new commitment is to stop making commitments. Let it go Allison.

Last thing I learned: Health and fitness is the field I am supposed to be in. It tends to be all I ever really want to talk about and one of the only things that I am actually knowledgeable about. I want to help people get healthy and love their lives, including myself. I want to spend all my free time working on my profession, seeking knowledge, and developing my own business. So why don’t I do these things? Well, I am going to. Screw what other people “think” I should do or “say” is the right direction for me to take. I just don’t care anymore. I’m doing what I want to do and trusting that God will take care of the rest. That’s the end of that.

What a fun, yet productive and eye-opening weekend! I am so glad that I kinda put myself out there and actually had some fun for once, yet still focusing on stuff I need to get done and feeling like I accomplished some things that needed to be done/said. My DietBet starts today, so I’m sure you will be hearing quite a bit about that in the upcoming month, and I also go to LA exactly one month from today! Exciting things happening my friends. I am in a great mood right now and I really hope it continues through the week. Today will include teaching Sunday School, training a client, working on some local business research, putting together my Foodie Pen Pal box, and over necessities to get out of the way before the busy, busy week starts up again. Spice Up Your Life, Week 5

Last week I talked about conquering a fear. I was planning on running 6 miles without stopping. Did that happen? No. No way. Instead I ran 3 miles twice with a break in the middle for about 10 minutes of strength training. So I suppose I didn’t exactly succeed with that one, but I certainly pushed myself out of my comfort zone and did something I was terrified of. I really dislike running, but I want to love it. I don’t want to look like a dying animal after 2 miles anymore. I actually quite enjoy it outside, but don’t live in an area where it’s easy to do that. Frustration up the max.

I did have something really scary happen this week that I got through, so thank goodness for that. I tend to get myself worked up over things for nothing; definitely need to work on that!

Goal for this week:

53. Tell Someone to Screw Off.

Well that’s not very nice, now is it?! I do think it’s essential once in a while (okay, at least once a day) though. I guess what I think ya’ll should do this week is to do what YOU want. Not what you think you should or what others think you should, but what you feel deep down in your heart is right for you in that moment. We get too caught up in “society” and the norms that we forget about what is really important to us.

So I challenge you to say no. I have a huge problem with that, so this week is gonna be difficult for me. Any time anyone tries to make plans with me, I say yes. I make time. I make time for anything and everything and leave no time for myself. So if someone asks me to go to coffee and all I really want is to stay home and watch the season finale of The Bachelor? No. If I’m asked to babysit and I already had plans that I don’t want to cancel? No. If I’m “supposed” to run my errands, get my cleaning done, and play catch-up and all I really want is to take a nap? No. I’m exhausting myself and I know it.

We need to all work on not being so nice! I know that sounds terrible, but it’s true. I have been listening to the Jillian Michaels podcasts continuously since I discovered them. She stresses in every single one to find the underlying problem that is causing you discomfort or unhappiness and get rid of it. Nip the problem in the source and fix it right there, rather than trying to take baby steps to figure out what’s bugging you. No. You know what the issues is. We usually just don’t want to admit it. She stresses to want to change. You have to have a reason for what you’re doing (or not doing) to succeed. I swear, I am in love with that woman. She’s brilliant. She says stuff we all already know, but never think of in a moment of conflict.

Okay, so this has turned into a total rant. Oops. Back to the challenge: telling someone no. Here’s what I’m going to do this week:

  • not making conversation just for the sake of making conversation and ending up being really awkward
  • no commitments other than what is already on my calendar for the week
  • giving myself 2 full hours to call potential PT clients
  • spending at least one night with Luke with no technology

I need to learn to say no in like, every aspect of my life. I feel like a child!

On a random note, I got the Whole Foods salad bar TWICE this week. I am so darn happy about that lil fact right there. However, my wallet is not. Oh well. I want to live inside Whole Foods and people watch and drink their wine all day long please.

On another random note, I had a lemon Chobani for the first time yesterday. My new favorite flavor, by far. Even better when you add banana, berries, and roasted flaxseed. Yum yum yum.
