My Ideal Day of Food + Giveaway Winner

I want to congratulate Nicole at Fruit N’ Fitness for winning the Natural Vitality giveaway! Nicole, shoot me an e-mail at [email protected] so we can get you hooked up with your gift card Smile

Today I want to do something a little bit out of the ordinary. I don’t want to talk about my favorite foods that I would indulge in every day if I had the chance. I don’t want to talk about what I feel like I “should” eat to lose weight or whatever,  blah blah blah. Today I want to tell you my perfect day of food for me to feel my best. These are foods I eat on a regular basis, and if I were working from home, you can bet this is what every single day would look like.

Breakfast, 9:00 am:

  • Starbucks “Blonde” roast coffee (black)

  • Chobani pear yogurt with strawberries, blueberries, banana, and Michigan locally grown granola

  • Vitamins (L-Carnitine, Vitamin B, Vitamin C, and sometimes a few gummy vitamins if I’m feeling frisky)

Lunch, 1:00 pm:

  • Whole-wheat flax wrap with roasted red pepper hummus, spinach, and tabbouleh with tomato and cucumber

  • Parmesan garlic pop-chips

Snack, 4:00 pm:

  • Honeycrisp apple with almond butter

Dinner, 6:30 pm:

  • Steamed, seasoned broccoli

  • Garden veggie burger on a bagel thin with lettuce and ketchup
  • Fruit salad

Dessert, 8:00 pm:

  • Cabernet

  • Dark chocolate peanut butter cup

You better believe that when I move out on my own this is going to be just about what you see day after day, so get used to it friends. My schedule is just so all over the place that I don’t have the ability to meal-plan like some of you can and do. I need some consistency back in my life; everything runs smoother when I don’t need to check my calendar 3+ times a day just to see where I need to go next!

I also just wanted to share this quote really quickly from Strala Yoga, which my love Tara Stiles is the owner of:

“Part of liking yourself is acting to change the things that aren’t good for you & believing that you can. Change your mind to change your life.”

Do you work better on a schedule or just by going with the flow?

An Attitude Shift

I had one of the best days I’ve had in a really long time yesterday. Here’s the breakdown:

  • 5:30 am: Wake up, roll out of bed (literally), brush my teeth, throw my gym bag together, and get my butt out the door to workout.
  • 6:00 am: Arrive at gym and complete intervals of 0.5 miles on the treadmill + 10 minutes of circuit/HIIT training 4x, for a total 60 minute awesome workout.
  • 7:30 am: Leave the gym to drive to work after showering, getting ready, and making a protein shake for myself before leaving. I use brown rice protein powder if anyone cares.

  • 8:00 am – 5:00 pm: Babysit my girls! We had a GREAT day today, including ballet class, reading books at the library, going to Olive Garden for lunch, shopping for new outfits at Justice, grocery shopping, making popsicles, playing games, and doing a craft. Everyone was in a great mood today. The day flew by and was just wonderful.
  • 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm: Luke’s house for dinner/hangout time! We (he mostly!) made a delicious meal of spaghetti squash (regular penne for him) with roasted vegetables and kicked up marinara sauce, garlic bread, and a balsamic/feta based salad. SO good.
  • 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm: THE BACHELOR. Only one more episode. Boooooo.

It was a simple day, but definitely my kind of day. I am always happiest when things go according to plan. Completing my early morning workout with excess energy was such a great start to my day. I’m going to try out this schedule for the rest of the week and see how I feel come the weekend. If today is any indication, it’s really going to work out for me. I’m just so exhausted by the end of the day that the last thing I want to do is exercise. Mornings apparently work best for me!

I also tried something absolutely fantastic today. I have never drank pop, like ever, but I tried out this lemon-lime Zevia today, since we wanted to make popsicles with diet sprite, but couldn’t find it at the store. This was the next best thing! it’s all natural with no added sugars and is absolutely delicious. Luke said it’s just as good as regular sprite Smile with tongue out

Ignore my creeping boyfriend in the background.

Today was just a reminder for me about how much a positive attitude can turn your whole day around. When you go into the day with a good outlook, things are bound to go in your favor! This is definitely something I need to remind myself of every morning right now, and hopefully it will eventually become habit.

Since a while ago I said I was going to do a Q and A each Tuesday, I decided to just tell ya’ll some random facts because I feel like it and I’ve drank a lot of wine tonight.

  • I grew up as a competition dancer, from the ages of 3-17.

  • I have been dating Luke since September of 2008.
  • I am still best friends with my kindergarten bff, Erica Smile

  • I am absolutely obsessed with gummy bears.

  • I cry, a lot. Mostly for happy things. Last thing I cried at was the Beyonce documentary. Luke laughed at me.

  • My 3 favorite celebrities are Ellen DeGeneres, Jillian Michaels, and Miley Cyrus.
  • I am so freaking excited to be a mom one day.
  • I could eat salsa with a spoon and pickles every day of my life and be totally content.

  • I get the same thing at just about every restaurant I go to, every single time.

Okay, so today I’m hoping to have somewhat of the same schedule I had yesterday. Keep your fingers crossed for me that I can stick to it!

Have you ever tried Zevia? Any other flavors you can recommend for me?

So Why Are You Doing It?

I’m anticipating  a lot of questions about why I’m choosing to compete in the Fitness Universe competition this upcoming June. I thought I would just beat ya to it and type out the answers to some of the most common questions.

…Weird day.

  1. Are you trying to lose weight? No. Not at all. I’ve really gotten off track with my workouts lately, and I truly just want a reason to keep myself accountable for exercising and taking care of my body. Yes, I want to clean up my diet, and if some pounds drop in the process so be it. I have gained a few pounds recently, and I want to feel comfortable in my clothes again!
  2. How did you find out about the competition? Through Karena and Katrina at! You’ve probably heard me preach about them before, and I’ll keep doing it. I just adore those two girls.
  3. How will you fit this into your schedule? Great question. I have no idea! But I am determined to make it work. Now that I’ve put it out there, it’s too late to back down now! Some steps I’m going to take are to wake up a half hour earlier each morning (5:30 am), complete strength training routines at home while watching my nightly TV shows whenever possible, meal prep on the weekends to avoid breakdowns during the week, and track my progress via the TIU app.

Barney: And stop shouting! You&#8217;re scaring Cottontail.Ted: You&#8230; named the rabbit?Barney: You took longer to get here than I thought, we bonded, I&#8217;m keeping her.<br />
     How I Met Your Mother 6.05 - &#8220;Architect of Destruction&#8221;

  1. How far away is the competition? 121 days (June 27, 2013).
  2. Is your blog going to turn into a strict recap of your training? No way! I’m going to be posting a weekly schedule of workouts and nutrition tips each Sunday in case anyone wants to follow along with me, but other than that everything will be running as it always has Smile
  3. Is this a bodybuilding competition? Not at all. The goal is to be confident and fit in a bikini. That’s it. The bodybuilding competition is something completely separate. I’m going for the long and lean look, haha.

If there’s anything else you can think of, please leave it in the comments below! I’ve been getting some really awesome support from this community, and I am extremely grateful for that. You guys rock.

On a side note, who watched The Bachelor last night?! Holy crap! Ashlee was piiiiiiiiissed. I’m going for Lindsay now. Thoughts?

Last week I asked you guys to submit any questions that you have for me for me to answer this week. Let’s be honest, sometimes it’s difficult to come up with blogging topics. It’s also difficult to think of something to write about sometimes that other people can relate to. So I figured, why not talk about what you guys want to hear? I know that I love finding out new fun facts about fellow bloggers. It makes me realize how similar I am to a lot of you and actually challenges my way of thinking. So these questions were submitted to me in the comments, via e-mail, via message, etc. I’m keeping it anonymous for the sake of well, just being anonymous. And if you have any questions, leave them in the comments or e-mail me at [email protected] and I’ll post the answers next week Smile

  • If you could vacation anywhere, where would it be?

I have always loved cruises. My family used to go on them a lot when I was younger. I love how you literally just get to be on this big, moving boat of fun. The dinners are amazing and are “free” at the time. The entertainment is phenomenal. AND you get to go to a bunch of beautiful islands for just long enough to get a taste of it without getting bored. I have met such great people on cruises I’ve been on before. I haven’t been on a cruise since I’ve been 21 and I’ve never been on one with Luke, so that’s my next goal. Although Los Angeles in April is going to be a pretty fantastic vacation, too.

  • If you could pick any other name for yourself, what would it be and why?

This is such a great question. I totally used to watch So Little Time with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Their names in that show were Chloe and Rylie. Ever since that I have wanted to be named Rylie. I suppose I’ll settle for naming my first baby girl that instead. You think I’m kidding, but I’m totally serious. Rylie Marie. That’s her name.

  • What does a typical day in your life look like?

I have two different types of day pretty much: nanny day or gym day. Weekends don’t count; my weekends are all over the place haha. So here’s what a nannying day looks like:

6:00 am: wake up and do about a half hour of strength training routines

6:45 am: shower and get ready

7:30 am: leave for work

8:00 am – 5:00 pm: nanny (take the girls to school, make lunch, play, basically all the typical things you do with a 2 and 4 year old)

5:30 pm: get to the gym and workout, usually an hour or so of cardio

7:00 pm: get home, shower again (yuck), and eat dinner

8:00 pm: watch my shows, work on client training plans, and prep stuff for the next day

And here’s a gym day:

7:00 am: wake up and do about a half hour of strength training routines

8:00 am: get to the gym and check people in for the jazzercise class

8:30 am – 9:30 am: jazzercise

11:00 am – 12:00 pm: train client

12:00 pm – 4:00 pm: work the desk at the gym

4:00 pm – 5:00 pm: train client

6:00 pm: dinner with Luke and chill with him for the night

Of course I train clients at other random times throughout the week, but in a nutshell that’s my exhilarating life!

  • If you could have dinner with any person in the world, who would it be?

Ellen DeGeneres. No questions asked.

  • What was your major in college?

I got my B.S. in Hospitality and Tourism Management with an emphasis in event planning and a minor in business. That’s a mouthful, yeah? I actually started out as a dance major, but soon realized that there was a very slim chance I could make a career out of it. Now I’m regretting my decision, because I’m working in the health and fitness field anyway and not using my degree. Oh well, you live and you learn. But for any of you who haven’t gone to college yet, here’s my words of wisdom: DO WHAT YOU LOVE AND DON’T LET ANYONE TELL YOU OTHERWISE. That is all.

Yup, college days. Oh boy. And yes, my hair used to be super dark!

  • How did you and Luke meet?

Ooh this is a good one! So he was actually really good friends with my best friend in high school. I had seen him all around school, but had never talked to him because I thought he was weird and annoying, haha! When we were juniors in high school, we were both at a football game and some random guy was trying to hit on me and be all over me. Luke somehow caught up on signals that I was telling this guy, “Get the hell away from me,” and he really just like walked over and grabbed my hand! It was too cute. We hung out together with our group of friends all night, and he just kissed me at the end of the night! We hung out for probably about a month after that and then started dating, and here we are Smile

From then to now. We are such babies in the first picture!

  • What do you do in your spare time?

I’m going to be totally honest with you. I love to watch TV. It’s a problem. I also have recently started to love using my foam roller while I watch TV. I really like to blog. I read a lot of books. I research places to live. I organize. I work a lot on my laptop, on training plans, web design, researching places to live, PT jobs, etc. I spend time with my sisters. Nothing too crazy or out of the ordinary! Oh, I like to bake when I can, too Smile with tongue out

  • Where do you live?

I live in southeast Michigan with my parents. I moved back with them after I graduated college and am definitely actively looking for my own place to live.

Isn’t my mom beautiful?! I hope I look half as good as she does at her age.

There you have it! I would love to hear you answer any of the above questions in the comments below and submit something new for next week.

And I just gotta say it:

Have an amazing Tuesday!

Are you giving up anything or making any changes in your life for Lent? My goal is to get my eating habits under control. I’ll go into that in more detail later.

Big Changes

Before I get into anything, there are two things I really want to point out:

1. Olive Garden leftover cold mashed potatoes are quite possibly my new favorite thing, ever.

2. Chipotle. Is. Wonderful. Why have I never had this before!? Luke bought it for us after training at the gym, and I am obsessed.

I got a vegetarian bowl with brown rice, grilled veggies, some chunky tomato stuff that was surprisingly spicy, some corn mixture thing, and lettuce. We got chips and guacamole to split, which were equally fantastic.

Thanks babe ;)

Alright, now to talk about some new stuff.

I’ve talked on here a little bit about how I recently got a job personal training at a local gym. I decided to take a leap and put on the 250 business cards I ordered. You know what that means? I gotta buy my domain! Luke is going to help me set up the website hopefully within the next couple of days, so the link is going to switch a bit; just a FYI.

My business is called Shape Your Life. I’m offering personal training (obviously), nutritional counseling, and life coaching. Luke made up this handy dandy logo for me to use:

shape your life

I also set up a twitter account: @arealisticlife. Check me out! I also have a personal twitter, @allison_marie91 if you care :p

With all that being said, I’m about to start devoting a lot more of my time to blogging. My goal is to organize the shit out of this thing (excuse my language) so you guys know what to expect from my posts and when they’ll come out each day. I don’t know about you, but consistency is important for me. The blog is also going to start to be less whiny on my part (I’ve noticed I’ve been saying a lot of negative things about my life lately; oops :/) and much more focused on nutrition, fitness, and healthy living in general. I want this blog to me a place my clients can go for advice and to learn a little more about me, too! Here’s just a few ideas for topics I’ve been throwing around in my head:

- 2 posts daily, each at the same time approximately every day
- work with a program such as windows writer to make all fonts, pictures, links, etc. look the same
- link to past posts and external links at all opportunities
- take more pictures!
- Monday: a new quote
- Tuesday: Q and A
- Wednesday: a new workout
- Thursday: day in pictures
- Friday: a new recipe
- Saturday: a fun, healthy activity to try with friends or family
- Sunday: vlog!

Obviously I won’t stick to this perfectly, but I need some sort of outline to keep me sane. The other daily post will probably be about my day, my food, my workout, my annoyances (:p), etc. Basically the normal stuff you’re seeing on here now.

Just wanted to give ya’ll a heads up on what’s goin on over here! Thoughts? Suggestions?

What’s your twitter link? Do you have any recommendations of someone to help me with designing a website?
