The Bachelorette, Week 3

Thanks to Carly for this. Typical that I forgot about it during the episode though, because that requires effort on my part and I have had 0% of motivation the last few days.

This show gets more and more stupid every single week,  yet I will never, ever stop watching it. It literally disgusts me, but I just can’t give it up. This was absolutely the worst episode to date. Ever. Just some things to keep in mind that will undoubtedly make you feel better about yourself if you ever need a confidence boost.

  • “I like seeing guys in their natural state.” Are we referring to men as animals now? That’s nice.
  • I absolutely cannot stand how whiny and cry baby-ish this group of guys is. How on earth would one think a woman is going to be attracted to you by acting like more of a girl than she is?
  • If you tell a girl you were arrested for domestic violence on your second date, I don’t think there’s a huge chance she’s ever going to want to marry you. Even if it’s only for 5 minutes or so. Just saying.
  • A “man” who breaks his finger and cries and asks his girl to hold his hand and acts like he is dying of an incurable disease when he is RUSHED TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM would be off my show before he could even get to the hospital. Bye.
  • Don’t tell somebody about your day if they didn’t ask or you don’t have something exciting to say.
  • Don’t let your new girlfriend get friendly with your old girlfriend. That is a recipe for an absolute disaster if I have ever heard one.
  • Who goes on a date dancing on the side of a building? I would cry and ask to go out for drinks instead.
  • Being with more than one person is SO frowned upon in our society,  yet this woman can date 20 men and hold all their hands and kiss all of them and we are all about it. I do not understand.
  • “Did you know that I tried to kiss you today?” That’s the worst pick-up line in the history of pick-up lines I think.
  • If for some reason in real life a woman ever gives a man a rose, the appropriate response is not to give her a daisy in return. I don’t know what the appropriate response is, but that isn’t it.
  • “It’s called The Bachelorette for a reason. It’s not called let’s make friends.” But maybe it just should be. How funny would that be if it was a show about all these guys trying to be friends with each other? So much awkwardness would be involved and I would be so happy about it.
  • You are not in love with someone on your second date when they are seeing 20 other people.
  • Does anyone else say it along with Chris every week when he goes, “Des. Gentlemen. The final rose. When you’re ready.” EVERY WEEK. We can all count. We can all see there is one left. Thanks for the clarification in case anybody was confused.

And then there is Mistresses. I can’t even talk about that show, because this is supposed to be a blog applicable to all ages and that show is certainly not. I am not complaining about that though. Go watch it for yourself.

Bachelorette thoughts. Ready set go.

Do you wanna hang out?

Okay so get this. I was supposed to go to Chicago this weekend, but then I realized I had to work on Saturday so I couldn’t. Then I was going to go to Grand Rapids (where I went to college) for the weekend because my day cleared up on Saturday, BUT NOW I HAVE TO WORK STILL AND I CAN’T GO. So basically I had my whole weekend cleared and now I have no plans and all 5 of my friends are out of town. So what do I decide to do as I’m writing this on Thursday afternoon instead of doing all the stuff for work that really needs to be done? I turn on Bridesmaids and drink some wine. Like yeah, good idea Allison.

But that’s okay, because I literally have 5 days now with barely anything to do at all. And what’s on my big list of important things to get done?:

  • get a fancy pedicure
  • go shopping for everything in the world
  • organize my client files for the first time in, um, ever
  • make a million and five calls for work
  • get some tan lines that aren’t from my running clothes
  • apply for some “real” jobs, ugh
  • figure out a way to clean the 5 years of dust out of my laptop
  • clean out my car…..that may take all 5 days in itself
  • go through all the crap on my computer and delete all the random old things I have so it runs faster than taking a half hour to start up; too bad I’m technologically challenged and this will probably also take me 5 days
  • WATCH THE BACHELORETTE FINALLY OMG.

Don’t I have an exciting life? I swear, one of these days I’ll get it together, but let’s be real. That’s probably not happening anytime soon.

—-

So I actually did do something productive and develop a few new circuit workouts for some of my clients. And look at that, I actually have pictures to show you how to do them! This very well may be the first and last time I ever do this, so enjoy it while it lasts.

I use 5 lb. dumbbells for these circuits and repeat them each 2x for a full body workout.

Circuit #1:

  • Static squat row (25 total)

image

  • Crescent lunge kickback (15 each side)

imageimage

  • Standing side crunch (20 each side)

imageimage

  • Lift off lunge with shoulder press (15 each side)

imageimage

  • Warrior 2 row (10 each side)

imageimage

Circuit #2:

  • Plie punch (30 alternating)

imageimage

  • Long leg crunch (20 alternating)

image

  • Clock lunge (5 rounds each side)

image

imageimage

  • Push up to side plank (10 alternating)

imageimage

  • Booty side kicks (15 each side)

imageimage

Don’t judge me and my awkward facial expressions please. Kbye.

What are you doing this weekend?! Let me live through your exciting lives since I don’t have one of my own.

The most adventures I’ve had in a long time.

Hello! First of all, I just want to thank you all for leaving such sweet comments on my post from yesterday. A lot of you have been saying you admire my positive attitude, which totally makes my day, because I feel like I am negative a lot of the time! So thanks for making me smile and changing my own attitude about myself Smile

Yesterday Audrey and I went to a small town called Petosky in Michigan. It is super small and right on the water and absolutely adorable. We went with my great-grandma and my great-aunt and had an absolute blast.

image

We may or may not have stopped at a winery while we were walking around and did a tasting at 11 a.m. Oops. I also bought a super cute ring and some mother’s day presents.

image

image

Then we went to the most delicious little restaurant ever called Whitecaps for lunch. I got an apple panini, which had “granny smith apples, gorgonzola cheese, apple butter, spinach, and caramelized onions.” Uh, best thing ever. And stealing some of the beer-battered fries from my grandma was a great idea as well.

image

I kid you not, Audrey and I were exhausted after our little 5-hour day trip! We have been so used to just laying around for days and doing things on our own time that it was different to actually have plans and do something real. We spent the rest of the day laying around the house and catching up on our TV shows.

image

Here’s something else we’ve been up to:

What an exhilarating life I lead. Our plan is to start up a YouTube channel with us going through our bucket list, in hopes that Ellen will help us out with the ones that involve her! And we basically just want to be like Jenna Marbles and work from home, but do it in California while I am working for Ellen. Solid plan.

I will say that one of my favorite things about being up north is going for a run in the morning. It is so silent that it seems like I am the only person in the world. I haven’t even used my headphones the last few days! Seeing deer and bunnies on my run is much more enjoyable than getting exhaust blown in my face from cars on the highway like at home. I also like having time during the day to get everything done without having to be rushed; keeps the stress levels down like crazy! However, it is really hard for me to sleep here since I am not used to the area, so I’ve been constantly exhausted, but that’s okay! I have coffee and wine to get me through Smile with tongue out

We only have today and then head out in the morning, so we’re off to enjoy the beautiful weather, see some family, and just chill for one last day <3

Last thing. Have you ever had this delicious creation? If not, you must do so immediately.

image

What gets you through the day when you are exhausted?

A weekend away.

Hey guys! How is it going?? A bunch of random, non-important things have happened over the past few days so let me catch you up on that Smile with tongue out

Thursday

  • drove 3 hours up north with my best friend and may or may not have stopped at a wine tasting on our way

image

  • went and got some delicious, local pizza with my grandma
  • got manicures!
  • workout: 1 hour power walk

Friday

  • went downtown to get lunch and go grocery shopping
  • drink wine at noon :x

image

  • make a delicious dinner of sweet potato fries, asparagus, and more wine

image

image

  • workout: 40 minute run/walk, TIU malibooty 3x

image

Saturday

  • went to my aunt’s house to visit for a few hours
  • made thin crust margarita pizza for dinner
  • went out on the town (note the sarcasm) and visited a few local bars

image

  • stayed up late enough to watch last week’s episode of SNL and be in bed by 11; aren’t we wild?

image

  • workout: 1.5 hour walk, TIU under the sea 3x

Sunday

  • cleaned up, did laundry, and dishes

image

  • made a wonderful lunch of TIU sweet potato fries, Brussels sprouts, and strawberries

image

  • caught up on computer work and watched a lot of Real Housewives
  • had our own little Cinco de Mayo fest with guacamole and kale chips and some yummy drinks
  • workout: 45 minute run and 1/2 hour Tara Stiles yoga

Things are going well so far! Of course we did other random things during the days, like walk the dogs a lot, but it’s just been very relaxing and chill so far; perfect. And we still have all day today and tomorrow before we leave on Wednesday! Score. We actually have some real plans for the next few days; surprise, surprise.

Now I just want to talk about the Tone It Up 2013 Bikini Series real quick. I am 100% head over heels obsessed with Karena and Katrina (in a non-creepy way, I swear).

They have truly changed my outlook on health and fitness for the better, and I could not be more grateful to them. Since I am a personal trainer and a nutritionist, I tend to put all my time and energy into my clients and forget about myself in the process. It is so easy for me to help other people and ignore my own needs. K & K have showed me that it is possible to do both! They have given me a phenomenal lifestyle to follow that is fun, rewarding, and one that I love to share with others. I am so lucky to have my best friend Sarah to do the bikini series with; her accountability has been fantastic!

image

image

I am planning a trip back to California (hopefully!) in June or July, and I really, really hope I am about to go to Manhattan Beach and talk to Karena and Katrina about their business and how they stay so fantastic. Enjoy this random picture Luke took from the last time we were there, lol.

image

They have really motivated me to move forward with my own online health coaching business, and I don’t think I would have made this decision if it weren’t for them. They are so darn successful and get to do what they love with their best friend for a career; does it get any better than that?! I don’t think so. They are so realistic (always post pictures drinking wine; my soul mates since it’s 2pm on a Sunday when I am writing this and I have a glass next to me) and make working out and eating healthy seem like a breeze. Which it is! I think it is sad how it is normal to eat crap and lay on the couch all day in our country. Everyone deserves to be happy and healthy and lead their ideal life. I am getting there, but need to move to California to top it off!

Ever since discovering Tone It Up in August 2012, my mindset on health has changed. I am able to provide my clients with better motivation, since I am motivated myself. I am able to crave healthy foods for the first time in my life, instead of throwing crap in my mouth just because (most of the time Smile with tongue out). I am starting to look forward to my morning runs, when running used to be hell for me. I get antsy if I sit still for too long and always look to TIU for a quick routine during commercial breaks of my favorite shows. These wonderful women have made me a happier person, and I would love to give anyone else more information if they are interested in purchasing a nutrition plan or even jumping on board with the bikini series!

And maybe the grand prize of the series will convince you to join: a trip anywhere in the entire world from Contiki Vacations for you and a friend! Is that insane or what?! What generous people! My friend Sarah and I are doing the series together and really are hoping we are able to win the trip (obviously), but at least for me, the journey to get to the end of the series is more important than any prize. I just want to be healthy and confident with my body and would love for every other woman in the world to feel the same. Thank you Karena and Katrina <3

My friend Hannah shared this picture with me, which I thought was very appropriate for this post:

182539_120436194823086_2144465766_n[1]

If you won a trip anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A lot of food and a lot of goals

Are you surprised that on a Monday morning I woke up an hour and a half after I intended to? Me either. Instead of working out, I played with my cat.

100

And on Sunday instead of working out I painted my nails. Noticing a pattern here?

101

104

I’ve kinda fallen out of the exercise thing. Ever since I was told to take a break, I just decided to take a really long break. That’s okay. After I get back from LA, I will be back at it at 5:30 every morning. Maybe. Don’t take that too seriously.

Yesterday was a good time. I had maple pecan oatmeal with a diced apple and cinnamon. I did not take a picture, because I was running late. Surprise surprise. My 2 year-old lined up our shoes like this and it almost made me cry because it was so cute.

102

Then we had a delicious lunch for those with very mature taste buds of green beans, apple slices, and a grilled cheese, dipped in ketchup of course.

103

After that we played inside and watched lots of Backyardigans because it was raining and who likes rain if you have to be outside in it? Not me. Rain to me means stay inside, read a book, and drink some tea. Or if you’re with kids, watch Nick Jr, have some fruit snacks, and twirl around in circles. Speaking of snacks, I had a lot yesterday. Like, a lot. I could not stop eating. It was all that petting the cat that worked up my appetite.

After nannying I went to the gym to train one of my clients that I absolutely adore. She is cute as a button and becoming strong as a fox. I feel like that’s not the right animal for that saying. Correct me if I’m wrong. I was starving when I got home, so I shoveled in my mouth the first thing I could grab. That was a Chobani bite, using a banana as a spoon, and a ridiculous amount of barbeque pop chips. Gosh, I eat like a child. I do not think that will ever change.

105

My stomach has been hurting me the last few nights, so I decided to stop it before it starts and have some of my all time favorite saltine crackers. And no, I am not kidding. These are the bomb.

106

Now for the really important part of this post. I bet you all want to know what my goals for my LA trip are. Settle in.

  1. Meet Ellen DeGeneres and give her the biggest hug in the whole wide world and try not to get tears on her shirt.
  2. Not sing “I hopped off the plane at LAX…” when I hop off the plane at LAX. And yes, I will hop. Ask Luke. He will be able to support that statement.
  3. Drink at least 4 glasses of wine every day.
  4. Take a picture in front of the Hollywood sign.
  5. Kiss Ellen’s star on the walk of fame. Who are other cool celebrities who’s stars I should kiss? Or maybe just see. I’m not hip enough to know most of those people, so help a sister out.
  6. Eat a really good meal every night. And go to brunch at least once. We love brunch and mimosas.
  7. Play a game in the airport during our 4 hour layover on the way home. Scavenger hunt maybe?
  8. Go to Disneyland.
  9. Learn to surf.
  10. Take a Pilates class with Miley Cyrus.
  11. Workout with Jillian Michaels.
  12. Run into Chelsea Handler at a bar and play pranks with her all night.
  13. Meet Justin Bieber so I can take him home to marry my sister.
  14. Meet Karena and Katrina from Tone It Up and be jealous of their awesome hair and bodies.
  15. People watch. A lot.
  16. Go to Café Gratitude, Pressed Juicery, Urth Café, The Ivy, Sprinkles, and Cheesecake Factory. I know, I know. I am SO original and not touristy at all. I think all we’re going to be doing this trip is eating.
  17. Have Ellen love me so much in her audience on Wednesday that she invites us back Thursday and Friday, too.
  18. Have Ellen ask me to work for her so I never have to come home.
  19. Win the lottery while I’m there.
  20. Do what Luke wants to do, too! We’ll fit in in somehow. I have faith. No sleep and lots of sugar is the secret. We have a large stash of gummy bears to pop as soon as we start to feel tired. No rest allowed.

You think I can do it?? Babe, we have a lot to pack into 3 days. Get ready. Carb-load now so you’re prepared. I am already planning on drinking more coffee than I ever have in my life on Wednesday morning and only stopped to switch it with wine until we come home on Saturday. Maybe if I send Ellen my list she can help me. I think I will.

ONE MORE SLEEP!! Smile <3

What’s the most fun thing you’ve ever done in your life?

Mine was seeing Ellen the first time. I hope the second time tops it!

Coffee or wine?

I cannot choose. I just can’t. Give me your input!

Today I want to do something a little bit out of the ordinary. I don’t want to talk about my favorite foods that I would indulge in every day if I had the chance. I don’t want to talk about what I feel like I “should” eat to lose weight or whatever,  blah blah blah. Today I want to tell you my perfect day of food for me to feel my best. These are foods I eat on a regular basis, and if I were working from home, you can bet this is what every single day would look like.

Breakfast, 9:00 am:

  • Starbucks “Blonde” roast coffee (black)

  • Chobani pear yogurt with strawberries, blueberries, banana, and Michigan locally grown granola

image

  • Vitamins (L-Carnitine, Vitamin B, Vitamin C, and sometimes a few gummy vitamins if I’m feeling frisky)

Lunch, 1:00 pm:

  • Whole-wheat flax wrap with roasted red pepper hummus, spinach, and tabbouleh with tomato and cucumber

image

  • Parmesan garlic pop-chips

Snack, 4:00 pm:

  • Honeycrisp apple with almond butter

Dinner, 6:30 pm:

  • Steamed, seasoned broccoli

  • Garden veggie burger on a bagel thin with lettuce and ketchup
  • Fruit salad

Dessert, 8:00 pm:

  • Cabernet

image

  • Dark chocolate peanut butter cup

You better believe that when I move out on my own this is going to be just about what you see day after day, so get used to it friends. My schedule is just so all over the place that I don’t have the ability to meal-plan like some of you can and do. I need some consistency back in my life; everything runs smoother when I don’t need to check my calendar 3+ times a day just to see where I need to go next!

I also just wanted to share this quote really quickly from Strala Yoga, which my love Tara Stiles is the owner of:

“Part of liking yourself is acting to change the things that aren’t good for you & believing that you can. Change your mind to change your life.”

—-

Do you work better on a schedule or just by going with the flow?

Ramblings Like Crazy

I know I just did a post like this, but my mind is all over the place tonight with things I want to write about. So I think I’ll write about them all. Excuse the random-ness. That’s exactly how my life is right now.

  • It’s my last day house-sitting. Boo. I have to stop pretending like I’m rich now and go back to reality. This week has taught me a couple of things. I learned how difficult it is to take care of a house, especially a big one. I learned how your heart jumps every time a dog barks after dark. I learned how much I love silence, but I learned how lonely I get and how much I really appreciate the company of my family. I get to house-sit again in a couple of weeks, and now that I’ve got the swing of things it should be a little easier to get used to.
  • I love wine. I had this crazy thought that I wasn’t going to drink at all during the month of April. HA. It’s April 3rd and that resolution is long broken. Honestly, why do I make these ridiculous promises to myself that I know I won’t follow through with? And, to make things even better, a lady bought me a bottle of wine at the store last night! I was in the worst mood there and was standing in the aisle staring at the bottles of Cabernet, even though I buy the same type every time, and she goes, “Rough day?” And I told her yes. She ended up being in line behind me at the checkout and told the cashier to just put it on her bill. I love her.
  • I also really love reading blogs. Last week I deleted a bunch of blogs that I was consistently reading, because they weren’t benefitting me in a positive way. I am now left with significantly fewer blogs, but I am actually able to read every word now and really pay attention to what I am reading, instead of rushing through them. I’ve gotten a lot of great ideas lately, from Melissa’s organization challenge to Heather’s rest week, to some great recipes and workouts and just general life advice. So thank you ladies!
  • I can already tell that BeachBody is going to be a great company to work with/for, even though I haven’t really gotten started yet. I’ve been super busy yet and haven’t had the opportunity to put as much time as I would like into my business, but that will all be changing this weekend when I start to develop my own challenge group (and I really hope that some of you will decide to join me!). I’ve been doing a lot of training over this past week and now have a solid understanding of what I should/can be doing daily. I’m ready to get this going and learn to make an income from home.
  • The combination of TurboFire and yoga routines I’ve been doing is just about as perfect as perfect can be. I get my sweat on big time in the morning with Chalene Johnson and then wind down later in the day with Tara Stiles. Goodness, I wish I had unlimited hours in the day to get everything done. I hate feeling rushed during exercise, and that’s all I’ve been feeling lately. I’m trying to just breathe though it and tell myself that I have all the time in the world, but the truth of the matter is that I just don’t.

  • I’ve been staying up really late lately. And by late, I mean midnight. Midnight may seem like nothing for some of you guys, but it’s basically the middle of the night for me since I wake up around 5:30 every day. I just feel like I have so many things to get done on the computer and need to get them done before I go to bed or I won’t be able to sleep. Then I feel like I need to get up earlier than I need to so I don’t have to rush through my workouts, but I end up messing around on my iPad in the morning and being late anyway. Lose, lose.

  • I feel like everything is frustrating me lately. I have no patience and no motivation to hide my irritation. I’ve been trying really hard to just take a deep breath and move on, but that’s not always possible. I’m hoping that I’m able to get over this soon, but it’s really bad right now. My to-do lists aren’t helping with my stress like they usually do; I feel like more things are being added than I can handle and take care of. Especially since I have a different week next week (LA vacation), I’m freaking out about getting everything done in time! Since I have so much frustration and stress, I tend to take it out on my loved ones, which really isn’t fair. It feels good to just say that and get it out, but I hope these feelings go away soon!

  • I’m freaking out about going to Ellen next week. Our flight lands at 10:15am at LAX and we need to be in Burbank for the taping at 2:00pm. We have plenty of time to get there, since we’re renting our own car and it’s 20 miles away from the airport/hotel, but I’m still worried. What if there’s a flight delay? What if our car isn’t ready? What if the traffic is crazy? Keep me in your thoughts next Wednesday that I don’t lose my mind and that I’m not drunk by 7 a.m.

  • I’m starting to think that too many vegetables upset my stomach. I’ve been feeling really bloated and gross lately and can really only account it to the amount of veggies I’ve been consuming in the past few weeks. I love them, but I’m pretty sure that’s what is making me feel like crap. Any suggestions on good things to eat for lunch/dinner with less vegetables and no meat since I’m a vegetarian? Ugh, this is getting complicated.

  • Shopping makes me a lot happier than I previously thought. I went to the mall yesterday and simply buying a couple of new outfits put the biggest, goofy smile on my face. I hate spending money, but I love having new things. Honestly, I think online shopping is the best. Who doesn’t love getting mail?!

I think that’s enough randomness for one night. You can (hopefully) look forward to a normal post tomorrow. I’ll be back at home, back to my regular schedule, and working on my time management skills to lead a less stressful life.

Give me your random fact today!

There’s been a ton of stuff over the weekend that’s come up for me to write about, but I figured I would spread it out over the week instead of having a ridiculously long, obnoxious post today. You’re welcome Smile with tongue out

First of all, I wanted to share with you the link to the article that I wrote for FitKit! FitKit is a company that uses an interactive lifestyle quiz to help determine and mold how to best live your healthy life. They ask questions about age, gender, sleep, happiness, etc. and then give you a personalized doctor’s recommendation to be the best version of yourself you can be. Super cool. Check it out and take the quiz if you get a chance!

Now I want to talk about my wonderful foodie pen pal from March! Lindsay over at The Lean Green Bean sponsors this wonderful event, so thank you! It was my first time participating, and it was so much fun. My package came from a reader Frankie, and she was SO generous. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Here’s what I got:

  • Homemade coconut granola. This was delicious. It was so good that I had a few chunks plain and used the rest on my oatmeal for a couple of days. I think it only lasted me 2 days! Plus, she packaged it in a mason jar which just made it that much cuter.

fpp

  • Coconut mocha k-cups. Frankie was so sweet and noticed on my blog that I had just gotten a Keurig and got me some k-cups! Some k-cups that are my new favorite flavor. All I can say is that if you haven’t tried this kind and you like coffee, go get them now.

fpp2

  • A strawberry cheesecake quest bar. How did she know I had been wanting to try these things forever?! Seriously, so delicious. I’m just mad I didn’t think to heat it up in the microwave first.

fpp1

  • Oatmeal raisin cookies from a local bakery and a dark chocolate raspberry bar. Um, wow. These cookies are now a favorite among my friends, and the chocolate bar was perfect to have with my wine at night.

fpp3

She also included a coupon for some awesome protein powder online. Thanks so much Frankie! I am so glad I decided to participate in this, even though I will not be doing it again this month. I have my LA trip and was planning ahead and thinking that I probably won’t have time to. It’s an awesome program though!

Speaking of wonderful packages, I got a box full of some of the most delicious cookies I’ve had in my entire life from Caitlin yesterday. Thank you so much love! Made my day<3

“People tend to think that happiness is a stroke of luck, something that will descend like fine weather if you’re fortunate. But happiness is the result of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly.” – Elizabeth Gilbert

Spice Up Your Life, Week 6

Hi friends! I had an amazing day yesterday. Like really freaking good. I woke up early to watch some more Tara Stiles videos on her youtube channel. Gosh, I love that woman. She makes me so happy. I just want to be her best friend, but there’s no way I’m cool enough for that. Then I was at the gym for a little while working, followed up by running a few errands, and babysitting all afternoon. Kids make me smile. Then Luke and I had a date night at Cheeseburger in Paradise, where I got a Calypso Salad, containing avocado, strawberries, pineapples, mandarin oranges, apples, honey roasted almonds, and red onion and a Skinny Margarita. The margarita was fantastic; literally tasted just like tequila and lime (just how I like it!). I may or may not have convinced Luke to split some key lime pie with me as well. We also saw The Call, which was really scary and made me never want to pump gas ever again. I am not happy about that movie; not happy at all. It broke my heart.

I do have a question for you guys. When Luke and I go to LA next month, we’re not sure if we’re going to rent a car or take cabs everywhere we go. We’ve been trying to compare prices and they’re honestly quite similar. Anyone have any suggestions on if you think it would be better to drive ourselves or get cabs? A pro of our own car would definitely be that we could drive along the coast and not have to worry about waiting for a car. A con would be that we both suck at directions and LA is confusing as it is. Thoughts, suggestions?

Last week in the Spice Up Your Life Challenge I asked you guys to say no to someone. How did it go? I have found that a common theme among many of us is that we tend to say yes to everything. I know that I am a huge people pleaser and always try to keep my promises, yet I don’t take care of or keep promises I make to myself. Gotta work on that! I did really good with the challenge this week. Here’s what I did to say no to others and make a little bit of time for myself:

  • didn’t work any hours behind the desk at the gym (not that I had time to anyway; hopefully I will next week because I actually really enjoy it!)
  • said no to my inner voice telling me not to and bought a set of Tara Stiles yoga DVD’s online
  • took my time responding to e-mails instead of feeling the need to do it immediately
  • said no to my inner voice telling me to workout and took a rest week full of simple yoga routines

Small changes, but definitely made a difference in my happiness levels. I’m hoping to continue this “free” mindset my week next week and see if things can increase even more. I’m starting to realize more and more every day how much I love yoga. I always kinda knew I was into it, but taking time for myself to relax AND work my body/mind this week was perfection. This may be a new path for me. Yoga helps me to connect to myself and make better decisions throughout my day. So yay for that!

Challenge for this week:

40. Create a sacred space.

Um, wow. What weird timing to get this goal when I’ve just been preaching about the benefits of yoga and meditation. The book describes this goal of more of a legit sacred space. I say to find somewhere you feel comfortable and develop it into a happy place where you can go whenever need be. Examples of where this could be:

  • In your car. Even though I have terrible road rage, when I don’t put any music on in my car and have my commute to just think and be alone, I am ridiculously happy. In the mornings I listen to the news, but coming home at night I usually sit in silence. It gives me a chance to reflect on myself and my day and to also just have some quiet time after being around loud people all day.
  • In your bedroom. This is where we all do the most relaxing thing ever: sleep. Your bedroom should be a place you can go to reflect, write, watch TV, relax, workout, stretch, read, ANYTHING. I do pretty much everything in my room, but that very well may be because I still live with my parents. It will be interesting to see if that changes once I move out. In my opinion, your bedroom should be your happy place. Anything goes.
  • In your mind. As long as you know how to block out the rest of the world and concentrate on yourself, all you need is your mind. I’m working on this one. I would love to be able to walk down a busy street and not be affected by others; just myself.

And here’s some ways to make that space sacred for you:

  • look forward to the time you get to spend there each day
  • fill it with things you love
  • only allow others there that benefit you!
  • associate positive thoughts with it

There are obviously many more places you could choose and ways to make it happy, but these are just the main ones I can think of right now. This week I am going to focus on transforming my mind into a place that is full of happiness for me. I’m going to try to get rid of all the negativity, worry, and rushing I feel on a regular basis and focus on relaxing, breathing, and knowing that I have complete control over my body.

Enjoy your weekend! Good luck to all the ladies running in the DC Rock N’ Roll half this weekend <3

Where is your sacred space?

Thankful Thursday

Is that a thing? Thankful Thursday? It probably is. I feel like there’s a theme for every single freaking day of the week. If it’s not a thing (which I’m sure it is), I’m making it up now. I’m sick of talking about all the crap in my life. Let’s focus on the happy things!

  1. An absolutely delicious lunch yesterday from a local restaurant, Chomp. My girls have been asking me to go there for a few days now, and I honestly didn’t know what it was. Finally we had an opportunity to go, and let me just tell you: I am obsessed. If you are friends with me in real life, get prepared because I will be asking you to go there with me most likely in the next week. Their food is such fresh, with an extensive healthy menu and raw juice/smoothie options. I got the lime life juice (carrot, cucumber, apple, lime) and a pear salad (mixed greens, avocado, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, apple, pear, cranberries, walnuts, goat cheese). I think we will be making that place our Wednesday lunch spot every day until forever. So many things on the menu I want to try. I also have a feeling I will be spending a lot of money on juice from here on out….good for me, not so good for my wallet. juicesalad
  2. Massages. How lucky am I to have a boyfriend who I can say, “My shoulder is still killing me” and his response is to e-mail me a groupon gift for a deep tissue massage? I like him. And yes, my shoulder is still messed up from getting my blood drawn LAST THURSDAY. Something’s not right there. I also go to a local place near my house, Relaxing Waters Spa, that has infrared massage beds. I want to sleep in one of those please.
  3. Wine. Enough said.
  4. Sweatpants. You guys, I kid you not when I say that I have been living in sweats for the past 6 months. Regular pants suck. And since I have a job that doesn’t require me to wear real pants, I certainly will not. The other day the only clean sweatpants I had were these bright coral tight ones from Abercrombie. Yes, I wore them. And in case you were wondering, every single pair of jeans I own was clean. Sorry I’m not sorry.
  5. Tara Stiles yoga. Alright, if you haven’t discovered Tara Stiles by now, go to her website immediately. She posts so many amazing videos that are not only inspirational, but practical as well. I adore (I really like the word “adore” lately) her outlook on life, her earthy, fragile demeanor, and her peace fingers. I would look like a fool if I did that, but somehow she looks freaking cool. I’ve been starting every morning this week with a couple of her routines, since I’m taking the week off from exercise. It’s crazy how much better I feel throughout my day when I do yoga in the morning instead of an intense workout. Is that a sign?
  6. Kisses and “I love you’s” from children. Nothing makes you feel better about yourself than when a 2 year old comes up to you all on their own, gives you a big kiss on the lips and a hug, and tells you how much they love you. I promise, you will have a big, goofy smile on your face for hours.
  7. Sixteen Candles. Re-watching it on ABC Family yesterday reminded me how much better the old movies typically are than the stuff that is released nowadays. Except Luke and I are going to see The Call tomorrow and I’m pretty darn pumped.
  8. A little bit of extra free time this week. Not exercising has allowed me to get a little bit of extra sleep and save time on excessive showering, freeing up some more than necessary time for me. My body feels weird not working out, but I’m not thinking it’s necessarily a “bad” weird. Just different. We will see what happens when I attempt to go back to a regular exercise schedule on Saturday.

That’s all I’ve got for now. Some pretty fantastic stuff though!

Just wanted to share one more thing with you. As ya’ll know, I’m a certified trainer through AFPA. I get their news via e-mail each month and love sharing the articles they send me. The one that caught my eye this month is about the correlation between self-control and exercise, specifically short bursts of it. You can check the full article out here. What they’re basically saying is that when you do some high-intensity exercise (like HIIT training) for a short period of time, there is increased blood flow to your brain and you are more productive. Makes sense to me, but I would like to know more! The article is too short in my opinion.

Last but not least, do me a favor and follow me on facebook, twitter, instagram, and pinterest! The cute little snazzy buttons that link to these are to the left of my picture on the home page. I would love to see what you guys are into, other than your blog Smile
